Japan's opposition has pushed forward a bill to end the country's air mission in Iraq, following a recent decision to cut the country's navy operations in Afghanistan.
A committee of the opposition-controlled upper house passed the bill today (Tuesday) to end a Japanese Air Self-Defense Force mission that flies goods and personnel into Iraq on behalf of the U.S.-led coalition and the United Nations.
The bill is expected to be approved by the full upper house on Wednesday, but is likely to be voted down by the more powerful lower house, which is controlled by the ruling coalition.
Last week, Japan's last navy tanker returned home, ending its six-year mission in support of U.S.-led coalition troops in Afghanistan. Opposition leaders had argued the refueling operations violated the country's pacifist constitution.
