Australian Prime Minister John Howard is warning voters that Australia will fundamentally change if his 11-year government is voted out of office in Saturday's election.
Mr. Howard appealed to voters today (Friday), saying that if they think the country is heading in the right direction, they should not put that at risk by changing the government.
The prime minister and his conservative ruling party face opposition Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd, a former diplomat who -- according to public opinion polls -- may win on Saturday.
Mr. Howard is a close ally of President Bush, and has pledged to keep Australian forces in Iraq until local troops can take care of their own security.
But Rudd says he will withdraw the 500 combat troops from Iraq and sign the Kyoto climate treaty, which Mr. Howard has staunchly refused to do.
