동남아국가연합 (아세안)과 유럽연합 16개국 지도자들은 21일 버마 군사정권에 대해 민주화를 촉구했습니다.
아세안과 유럽연합 지도자들은 이날 싱가포르에서 열린 연례 동아시아 정상회의에서 버마 군사정권에 대해 야당 지도자인 아웅산 수치 여사를 포함한 모든 정치범을 즉각 석방할 것을 요구했습니다. 이들은 또 버마의 집권세력이 최근 유엔과 접촉하고 야당과 대화를 재개한 것은 바람직한 일이라고 평가했습니다.
최근 싱가포르에서 열린 아세안 정상회의의 주요의제는 지난 9월 버마 정부의 민주화 시위 강권진압이었습니다.
그러나 싱가포르의 리센룽 총리는 아세안은 버마 문제 이외에 유럽연합과의 무역협상도 중요하다고 말했습니다.
아세안과 유럽연합은 22일 향후 37개국과 10억 인구를 통합할 무역협정 관련 협상에 박차를 가하기로 합의했습니다.

Asian leaders and the European Union are urging Burma's military-ruled government to speed up democratic reforms.
The declaration from EU and Asian leaders attending the annual East Asia Summit (ASEAN plus six) calls for the release of political detainees, including opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. It also calls for the lifting of restrictions on political parties and for more dialogue.
Association of Southeast Asian Nations meetings this week in Singapore have largely been overshadowed by Burma and its bloody September crackdown of pro-democracy and anti-government protesters.
Still, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long has said ASEAN would not let the matter of Burma hold up trade talks with the EU. During meetings today (Thursday), the two blocs agreed to speed up trade talks linking some 37 countries and one billion people.
