캘리포니아 주 소방 당국은 20만 헥타르가 불타고 가옥 2천 여채가 전소된 이번 캘리포니아 산불이 기온이 떨어지고 습도가 높아지면서 대부분의 지역에서 거의 진화단계에 접어들었다고 밝혔습니다.
소방당국은 로스엔젤레스 남부 오렌지카운티의 산불과 멕시코 국경지역과 인접한 샌디에이고 근처의 산불은 모두 방화범의 소행이었다고 밝힌 가운데, 아놀드 슈와츠제네거 캘리포니아 주지사는 주 정부는 이들 방화범을 체포해 처벌할 것이라고 약속했습니다.
경찰당국은 현재 다양한 단서들을 조사 중이며 방화 협의로 다섯 명의 용의자를 검거해 조사 중에 있습니다.
경찰은 이들 다섯 명 모두는 대규모 산불에는 연류 되지 않았으며 로스엔젤레스 지역의 한 남성은 방화 혐의가 없어 지난 금요일 풀려났다고 밝혔습니다.
한편 이번 화재로 인한 사망자수는 현재까지 7명인 것으로 집계되고 있으며 2만 여채 이상의 가옥과 구조물들은 지금도 산불 위험에 놓여 있습니다.

Firefighters in the U.S. Pacific coast state of California are being helped by cooler temperatures and higher humidity as they battle wildfires that have blackened 200 thousand hectares and destroyed two thousand homes.
Officials say a blaze (in Orange County,) just south of Los Angeles, and a small fire near San Diego (, not far from the Mexican border,) were both set by arsonists. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says authorities will find and prosecute them.
Authorities are investigating hundreds of leads, and five people have been detained on suspicion of arson. Police say none of them has been linked to any of the large fires. One man in Los Angeles pleaded Friday not guilty to arson.
The number of deaths blamed directly on the fires now stands at seven. More than 20-thousand structures are still considered threatened.
