서방 선진 7개국 재무장관들은 19일 중국에 대해 위안화의 평가절상을 촉구했습니다.
미국, 일본, 독일, 프랑스, 영국, 이탈리아, 캐나다 등 선진 7개국 재무장관들은 이날 워싱턴에 모여 국제 금융 문제를 논의했습니다. 재무장관들은 공동성명을 통해 “중국의 외화 증가와 인플레이션을 감안해 위안화의 평가절상이 가속화 되야한다”고 밝혔습니다.
미국을 비롯한 중국의 무역 상대국들은 중국 위안화가 인위적으로 저평가돼 있어 중국이 수출을 통해 불공정한 이득을 보고 있다며 중국에 보다 유연한 외환체제를 도입할 것을 요구해왔습니다.
7개국 재무장관들은 그러나 유로화에 비해 최저치를 기록하고 있는 미국의 달러화나 유로화, 일본의 엔화에 대해선 언급하지 않았습니다.
이에 대해 중국의 금융 당국은 중국이 이미 환율 제도를 점진적으로 개혁해 오고 있다면서 경제 구조를 바꾸지 않고 환율제도만 바꾸는 것은 위험하다는 입장을 보였습니다.
한편 한국의 권오규 부총리 겸 재정경제부 장관은 오는 22일 세계은행 합동연차총회 기조연설을 할 예정입니다. 권부총리는 이 연설에서 국제사회가 북한의 경제 발전을 위해 북한의 국제금융기구 가입을 지원해줄 것을 요청할 계획입니다.
Finance officials from the so-called "Group of Seven" wealthy nations are urging China to allow its currency, the Yuan, to rise in value more quickly.
They issued the call during a meeting at the U.S Treasury (in Washington) on Friday. Finance ministers and central bank managers from the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Canada were in attendance.
China controls the foreign exchange rate for the yuan. This year, China allowed that rate to rise by less than four-percent. Meanwhile, the euro is up nine-percent and the Canadian dollar is up 20-percent against the U.S. dollar.
Washington has said the value of the yuan is kept artificially low, and that it should be floated to reduce the trade imbalance.
International Monetary Fund officials have said the yuan is undervalued.
