중국 정부는 미국 의회가 티벳의 정신적 지도자 달라이 라마에게 ‘황금메달’을 수여한 것과 관련해 중국과 미국 두나라의 관계가 심각하게 손상됐다고 밝혔습니다.
류젠차오 중국 외교부 대변인은 18일 베이징에서 기자들에게 미국의 행동은 중국에 대한 내정 간섭이라며, 미국은 그러한 행동의 이른바 “끔직한 효과”를 만회하기 위한 구체적인 절차를 밟아야할 것이라고 말했습니다. 중국 외교부는 또 주중 미국대사를 소환해 이에 대해 강력히 항의했습니다.
부시 미국 대통령은 17일 워싱턴에서 72세의 달라이 라마에게 직접 ‘황금메달’을 수여하며, 중국 지도자들이 달라이 라마와 대화할 것을 촉구했습니다.
부시 대통령은 중국 정부는 달라이 라마가 평화와 화해의 전령이라는 것을 알기를 바란다고 말했습니다.
중국은 달라이 라마가 중국으로부터 티벳의 독립을 추구하고 있다고 비난하고 있습니다.
하지만 달라이 라마는 수상식 연설에서 티벳인들은 독립이 아니라 중국 내에서 진정한 ‘자치’를 원하는 것임을 재강조했습니다.
China says the United States has "gravely undermined" relations between the two countries by awarding Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, with its highest civilian medal.
Foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters today (Thursday) that the United States needs to take concrete steps to make amends for what he called the "terrible impact" of its actions.
The ministry also summoned Washington's ambassador in Beijing to deliver a strong protest over the ceremony.
In Washington on Wednesday, President Bush personally presented the 72-year-old Buddhist monk with the Congressional Gold Medal and called on China's leaders to open talks with the Dalai Lama.
China accuses the Dalai Lama of seeking independence for Tibet.
In his remarks, the Dalai Lama reiterated his desire for the Tibetan people to have meaningful autonomy within China.
