The head of Turkey's electoral board today (Wednesday) said officials decided by a majority of votes to hold the referendum on constitutional reforms October 21st as scheduled.
The reforms call for the election of Turkey's president by popular vote instead of the current parliamentary election.
Election officials had expressed concern about the referendum after parliament amended the text Tuesday in an effort to prevent a possible legal challenge to incumbent President Abdullah Gul. The amendment now allows Mr. Gul, who was elected in August, to see through his seven-year term and provides for his successor to be chosen by popular vote.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged voters to back the changes.**
