콘돌리자 라이스 미 국무장관은 다음달, 11월로 예정된 중동평화회의를 앞두고 이스라엘과 팔레스타인이 이견을 좁히기 위해 지난 수년만에 가장 진지한 노력을 기울이고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
라이스 장관은 15일 라말라에서 마무드 압바스 팔레스타인 자치수반과 회담을 마친 후에 가진 공동기자회견에서 이같이 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 부시 미국 대통령이 팔레스타인과 이스라엘 문제의 진전에 매우 성실히 임하고 있으며, 이 지역의 분쟁 종식을 미국 행정부의 최고 우선과제의 하나로 생각하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
라이스 장관은 부시 행정부가 미국의 후원하에 다음달 11월 미국 매릴랜드주 주도인 아나폴리스에서 열리는 중동평화 회의가 팔레스타인 국가 건설의 토대를 마련하게 되기를 바라고 있다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the Israelis and the Palestinians are making a serious effort to bridge differences before a planned Mideast peace conference next month.
Rice spoke today (Monday) in Ramallah at a joint news conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
She says President Bush is "absolutely serious" about moving the Palestinian-Israeli issue forward and has made ending the conflict "one of the highest priorities of his administration."
She added that the Bush administration wants the U.S.-sponsored peace conference in November (in the eastern U.S. city of Annapolis) to lay the groundwork for an eventual Palestinian state.
Mr. Abbas says he believes Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will be able to reach agreement on a joint declaration of principles before the conference.
