하원의 행정개혁위원회 위원장,헨리 왁스만 민주당 소속 의원 등 3개 위원회 위원장들은 12일, 콘돌리사 라이스 국무장관에게 보낸 서한에서 이같이 비난하고 이라크 정부내 부패가 이라크 저항분자들을 부추기고 미군 병력을 위험에 빠뜨리고 있다고 지적했습니다.
민주당 의원들은 또 국무부가 관계관들에게 이라크 정부내 부패상황에 관해 깊이 언급하지 말도록 명령하고 있다고 폭로했습니다. 국무부 대변인은 관계관들이 그런 명령을 받지 않았으며 특정 질문은 기밀등급에 따라 답변될 뿐이라고 말했습니다.
Some U.S. lawmakers are accusing the State Department of blocking information about corruption inside Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government.
Democrat Henry Waxman, who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and three other committee chairmen sent a letter Friday to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. They say corruption is fueling the Iraqi insurgency and endangering U.S. troops.
The lawmakers also say the State Department ordered officials not to comment in depth about the extent of corruption.
State Department spokesman Tom Casey said officials were not ordered to withhold information and that certain questions could only be answered in a classified setting.
