페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령이 오늘(6일) 실시된 대통령 선거에서 압승을 거뒀습니다. 하지만 대법원이 결과를 번복할 가능성이 여전히 남아있습니다.
파키스탄 중앙선거관리위원회의 콰지 무하마드 파로크 위원장은 오늘 연방의회에서 실시된 선거인단 투표에서 무샤라프 대통령이 257표 가운데 252표를 얻어 승리했다고 발표했습니다. 3표는 무효처리 됐으며 2표는 경쟁상대인 판사 출신 와지후딘 아흐마드 후보에게 돌아갔습니다.
파키스탄 텔레비전은 무샤라프 대통령이 또 4개 지방의회 가운데 3곳에서 압승을 거뒀다고 보도했습니다.
의원내각제를 채택하고 있는 파키스탄에서 대통령은 연방의회와 지방의회의 투표를 통해 선출됩니다.
무샤라프 대통령의 승리는 그러나 파키스탄 대법원의 자격 관련 판결이 나오기 전까지 공식 발표가 미뤄질 예정입니다.
파키스탄 대법원은 앞서 육군 참모총장을 겸직하고 있는 무샤라프 대통령의 대선 출마가 불법이라며 야당 후보들이 항소한 헌법소원 심리의 판결이 마무리 될 때까지 대선 결과를 발표할 수 없다고 결정한 바 있습니다.
대법원은 이와 관련한 심리를 17일 다시 열 예정입니다.
이슬라마바드에 있는 대통령궁에서 무샤라프 대통령은 승리를 선언하고 야당세력에게 정치적 대립을 포기하라고 촉구했습니다. 무샤라프 대통령은 적법성에 대한 질문을 받고 자신은 다수의 표를 얻었으며, 민주주의는 다수를 의미한다고 말했습니다.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has won the most votes in his country's presidential election, but the Supreme Court still could overturn the result.Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Muhammad Farooq says General Musharraf won 252 of the 257 votes cast today (Saturday) in parliament. Three ballots were judged invalid and two votes went to his main rival, retired judge Wajihuddin Ahmad.
Pakistani television says General Musharraf also swept the voting in three of Pakistan's four provincial assemblies.
But he cannot be officially declared the winner until the Supreme Court rules on legal challenges to his eligibility to seek office again while remaining in his post as army chief. The court will resume hearings October 17th.
On Friday, General Musharraf granted amnesty to former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and other politicians, clearing the way for a power-sharing deal.
At the presidential palace in Islamabad, President Musharraf declared victory and urged opposition parties to give up the politics of confrontation.
When asked about the legitimacy of the election, he said he received the majority of votes and that "democracy means majority."
