Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert are meeting in Jerusalem today (Wednesday) trying to finalize a document on Palestinian statehood that they hope to present at an upcoming Middle East peace conference.
The two side still disagree about the form of the document.
Mr. Abbas wants a detailed statement that addresses the status of Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees and final borders. Mr. Olmert has said he wants a more general declaration of principles.
An Israeli analyst (Jonathan Spyer) says neither Mr. Abbas nor Mr. Olmert wants to disappoint the United States, which is planning to host the international conference in November.
Both Israel and the United States also want to strengthen Mr. Abbas, who now heads a government in the West Bank, after the Islamic militant group Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in June.
