International forces have killed more than 125 Taleban insurgents during gunbattles in
southern Afghanistan. One U.S. soldier was also killed in the fighting.
Officials say the ongoing clashes began early Tuesday when several dozen Taleban
insurgents fired on Afghan and coalition forces in the Musa Qala district of Afghanistan's restive Helmand province.
Coalition aircraft and artillery pounded Taleban positions, killing more than 60 rebels in that strike. One U.S. soldier was killed during the battle.
International forces recently launched a new offensive in Helmand to try and bring more security and stability to the violence-plagued southern region.
In a separate but similar battle on Tuesday, more than 65 Taleban rebels were killed in the south-central province of Uruzgan.
