Israel's government has agreed to grant residency to 498 refugees from Sudan's troubled Darfur region who entered Israeli territory through Egypt.

Israeli officials say the Cabinet appointed a ministerial committee today (Sunday) to help the Darfur refugees settle into Israeli society. It is not yet clear what legal status the refugees will have.

Israel's government also decided today to expel all other illegal African migrants, thought to number about 25-hundred people. It said the expulsion also will apply to Africans who enter Israel illegally from Egypt's Sinai desert in the future.

Israeli officials say the Africans will be transferred to a third country willing to accept them.

They say the number of African infiltrators has fallen sharply since Israel reached an agreement with Egypt to send migrants back across the border. Officials say 150 Africans have made the illegal crossing so far this month, down from 900 in July.

Israel's Cabinet has agreed to free 90 Palestinian prisoners as a goodwill gesture to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' government.

Israeli officials say the prisoners chosen for release were not directly involved in fatal attacks on Israelis. All the prisoners are affiliated with Mr. Abbas' Fatah party, which is the dominant Palestinian force in the West Bank.

The first prisoners could be freed Tuesday, unless Israeli citizens challenge the releases in court.

Mr. Abbas' office welcomed the Israeli decision, but said it does not go far enough because Israel continues to detain 11-thousand Palestinians - including women, children and the elderly.

Also today, Israel's defense ministry said it will allow Mr. Abbas' government to deploy 500 Palestinian policemen in the West Bank city of Nablus.
