미국이 금리를 내린 것은 최근의 주택시장 침체로 인한 경기 하강을 막기위한 것입니다. 중앙은행의 금리 인하는 통상 경제 활성화로 이어집니다.
힌편 중앙은행이 금리를 내리자 뉴욕 증시를 비롯한 전세계 증시는 활황세를 보였습니다. 뉴욕 증시의 주가는 300포인트 이상 상승했습니다. 또 금리 인하로 경기가 활성화될 것이라는 예상에 따라 유가도 사상 최고치를 기록했습니다.
이날 미국 뉴욕시장에서는 10월 인도분 서부 텍사스 중질유(WTI)는 전날보다 94센트 오른 배럴당 81.51달러에 거래돼 사상 최고치를 기록했습니다.
또 미국의 금리 인하 소식이 전해지자 아시아의 도쿄, 홍콩,서울 증시의 주가도 일제히 상승했습니다.
U.S. central bank policymakers have lowered a key interest rate for the first time in four years, in an effort to help the economy avoid recession.
The Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee said the drop of the federal funds rate -- by one-half percent -- is meant to counter possible disruptions in financial markets resulting from weakness in the housing market. The federal funds rate will now stand at four-and-three-quarters percent.
The federal funds rate determines the cost that banks pay to borrow from each other. It is the Fed's main tool for influencing the U.S. economy.
U.S. stocks rose sharply after the news was announced Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose two and a half percent, while the S-and-P-500 rose nearly three percent.
Japanese stocks rose sharply in early trading Wednesday, as the Nikkei average was up more than three percent.
Investors had been prepared for a rate cut, but experts say the cut of one-half percent was more than expected.
