네그로폰테 부장관은 12일 이슬라마바드에서, 1천명 이상의 파키스탄 군인들이 무장분자들과 싸우다 사망했음을 지적했습니다. 네그로폰테 부장관은 또한 파키스탄 군이 아프간 접경 지역의 부족 자치지역에 대규모 병력을 파견했다고 말했습니다.
네그로폰테 부장관은 파키스탄 당국자들과 제2차 전략대화를 가진 후 그같이 말했습니다.
A top U.S. State Department official in Pakistan has praised that country's efforts to fight Islamic militants.
Speaking to reporters today (Wednesday) in Islamabad, Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte noted hat more than one thousand Pakistani soldiers have died fighting militants. He also said Pakistan's military has sent a large contingent of troops to restive tribal areas along the Afghan border.
Negroponte made the remarks after a second round of strategic talks with Pakistani officials.
The diplomat arrived in Pakistan today to discuss counter-terrorism, technology and other issues. He is expected to meet with President Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and civil society representatives during his visit.
Negroponte is the former director of national intelligence - the head of all U.S. intelligence agencies. He also served as the U.S. ambassador to Iraq in 2004 and 2005.
