조지 부시 미국 대통령은 미국 텍사스주에서 아세안 정상회담을 열자고 7일 제안했습니다.
부시 대통령은 이 날 호주 시드니에서 개최 중인 아시아 경제협력체 apec 회담에서 아세안 10개 회원국 가운데 7개국 정상들과 점심 식사를 한 뒤 이같이 밝혔습니다.
이번 초청은 버마를 포함, 아세안 전 회원국 정상들을 대상으로 한 것이며, 부시 대통령은 최근 버마의 지도자들이 민주주의 활동가들을 탄압한 데 대해 전제적이라고 비난한 바 있습니다.
President Bush has offered to host a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in his home state of Texas.
Mr. Bush issued the invitation today (Friday) after a lunch meeting with (seven) leaders of the 10-member ASEAN bloc at an Asian economic summit in Australia.
The invitation would cover leaders from all ASEAN countries, including Burma. Mr. Bush has recently described Burma's leaders as "tyrannical" and condemned the crackdown on pro-democracy activists there.
No date has been set for the summit, and it was not clear if Burma would accept the invitation.
The United States has recently been criticized for overlooking Asia because of its focus on Iraq and the Middle East. The invitation comes after Mr. Bush recently postponed a scheduled trip to Singapore to meet with ASEAN leaders.
