미국 상원이 자동차의 연료 효율성증대를 골자로 하는 포괄적인 에너지 법안을 승인했습니다.
민주당이 다수를 차지하고 있는 상원은 21일 에너지 법안을 표결에 붙여 찬성 65 반대 27로 법안을 채택했습니다.
상원은 이번 법안을 통해 자동차의 갤런당 평균 주행거리를 현행 40 킬로미터에서 2020년까지 56 킬로미터로 늘리는 데 합의했습니다. 미국의 자동차 업계는 새로운 법안에 강력히 반대해 왔습니다. 새 법안의 지지자들은 그러나 에너지법 시행으로 적어도 매일 1백만 배럴의 휘발류를 절감할 것이라고 말하고 있습니다.
미국이 자동자 평균 연비를 올린 것은 32년만에 처음입니다.
새 에너지법안은 또 오는 2022년까지 대체연료 360억 갤론으로 늘리는 것을 의무화하고 연료 가격 담합 등 부정행위에 대한 처벌 규정을 마련했습니다.

The U.S. Senate has approved a comprehensive energy bill that includes a huge increase in fuel economy standards for automobiles.
The measure passed late Thursday in the Democratic Party-controlled Senate by a vote of 65-27.
Lawmakers agreed to increase the average fuel mileage for all passenger vehicles from 40 kilometers per gallon to 56 kilometers per gallon by 2020. The automotive industry has intensely opposed the new standards. Supporters of the new requirement say it will save at least one million barrels of oil in the U.S each day. The increase in the fuel economy standards would be the first in 32 years.
The measure also mandates an increase of alternative fuels to 36 billion gallons a year by 2022, and sets penalties for price-gouging on gasoline.
