Pakistani officials say about 30 militants have been killed at a religious school near the border with Afghanistan.
The unnamed officials say the seminary, west of Miran Shah, the main town in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region, was being used as a training facility by al-Qaida militants.
Some Pakistani officials say the compound was hit by several missiles fired from Afghanistan. They say several foreign fighters were among the dead, including Arabs and Uzbeks.
But a Pakistani army spokesman (Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad) says the blast was caused by militants mishandling explosives. He says Pakistani troops were not involved.
A Human Rights Watch researcher (Ali Dayan Hasan) says Pakistan's government should allow an independent investigation of the incident.
