The Palestinian militant group Hamas is celebrating and consolidating its position after seizing control of the Gaza Strip in a week of fighting with the rival Fatah faction.
Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, who lives in exile in Syria, says his group still recognizes Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah as Palestinian president, and is ready to work with him "in the national interest."
Also today (Friday), Mr. Abbas, who is in the West Bank, appointed former Finance Minister Salam Fayyad, an independent, as the new prime minister. He would replace Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, whom Mr. Abbas dismissed.
Mr. Haniyeh, who has ignored his dismissal, today called for calm and unity among Palestinians.
More than 110 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza fighting, but Fatah remains in control of the West Bank.
The Mideast Quartet of peace mediators - the United States, European Union, Russia and the United Nations - have pledged full support for Mr. Abbas.
