Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party has officially nominated former premier
Frank Hsieh as its candidate in the island's 2008 presidential elections.
Speaking today (Tuesday) at DPP headquarters in the capital of Taipei, Hsieh said the
elections will be a race to "ensure that people can choose the kind of life they want to
live" and that "Taiwan is not taken over by China."
Beijing regards the island as part of its own territory and has threatened to attack if
Taiwan formally declares independence. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949.
China is Taiwan's biggest trading partner and security threat and will be a key issue in
the upcoming race.
Hsieh's main opponent is the former head of the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), and
former Taipei city Mayor Ma Ying-jeou.
