부시 대통령은 14일 백악관 연설을 통해, 앞으로 10년간 미국의 휘발유 소비량을 20%까지 줄이기를 희망한다고 말했습니다. 이어서 지구 온난화의 원인으로 지목돼온 이산화탄소 배출량도 억제해야 한다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 의회가 정부의 재생 에너지 의무 사용량을 늘일 것도 촉구했습니다. 미국에서는 옥수수에서 추출한 에탄올이 재생 에너지로 널리 쓰이고 있습니다.
한편 미국 대법원은 지난달 이산화탄소 배출 감소를 위한 조치를 취하는 것은 위법이라는 행정부의 해석이 잘못됐다는 판결을 내린 바 있습니다.

President Bush has ordered government agencies to begin regulatory steps to cut pollution from cars. He also urged Congress to pass legislation intended to reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil
In a televised statement from the White House (Monday), Mr. Bush said again that he wants to cut U.S. gasoline consumption by 20 percent over the next 10 years. He also wants to curb carbon dioxide production, which is blamed for global warming.
And he pressed Congress to sharply increase the government mandate for the use of renewable fuels like ethanol from corn.
Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the administration wrongly said that U.S. laws did not require officials to take action to reduce carbon dioxide.
