키팅 제독은 12일, 베이징에서 기자회견을 갖고 자신은 중국 지도자들이 항공모함 전단을 보유하는 것에 관심을 갖고 있는 것으로 알고 있다면서 이같이 말하고 그러나 그와 같은 강력한 기동무기 체제가 지니는 영향을 이해할 필요가 있다고 지적했습니다. 키팅 제독은 또 중국의 해군총참모장, 우솅리 중장에게 항공모함 개발과 건조, 운영의 어려움과 복잡성을 강조했다고 말했습니다.
키팅 제독은 이보다 앞서 11일 지난 1월 중국의 위성 요격용 미사일 시험발사에 관해 비판했습니다.

The commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific says China's interest in developing an aircraft carrier fleet is "understandable," and that the United States would be willing to help.
Admiral Timothy Keating made the comment today (Saturday) during a news conference in Beijing.
Admiral Keating says he believes Chinese leaders are "intrigued" by the idea of having aircraft carriers. But he says they need to understand the impact such a powerful, mobile weapon system can have.
Keating says he stressed to China's navy chief (Vice Admiral Wu Shengli) the difficulty and complexity of developing, building and operating an aircraft carrier
He also repeated comments he made to VOA Friday, criticizing China's test of an anti-satellite missile in January.
