The U.S. State Department says Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is postponing talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders originally scheduled for next week.
Spokesman Sean McCormack said today (Monday) Rice is putting off the meetings because of political turmoil in Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is facing calls for his resignation after investigators accused his government of failures in how it conducted the war with Hezbollah in Lebanon last year.
But McCormack said Rice could still include a stop in the Middle East after her trip next week to Russia.
Last week, the United States gave Israel and the Palestinian Authority a list of confidence-building steps for each side. They included the Palestinians developing a plan to stop Gaza militants from firing rockets into Israel. The benchmarks also included Israel relaxing travel restrictions on Palestinians in the West Bank.
