The political future of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is appearing more in doubt, as a top lawmaker in his ruling party urged him to resign following a report that criticized his conduct in last year's war against Hezbollah.
The head of the parliamentary faction of Mr. Olmert's Kadima party -- Avigdor Yitzhaki -- told Israeli radio today (Wednesday) the prime minister must step down to allow the party to form a new governing coalition.
Israeli media reports say Deputy Prime Minister Tzipi Livni is expected to also tell Mr. Olmert to resign during a meeting between the two later today. The reports also say Livni would lead a revolt against him within the Kadima party if he does not step down.
Livni, who is also Israel's foreign minister, is seen as a top candidate to replace Mr. Olmert.
