뉴베리 회장은 12시간 이상 계속 언론이 조승희의 동영상을 방송한데 따라 사람들이 잘못된 메시지를 받을 수 있다고 지적했습니다. 즉 정신적으로 문제가 있으면 정신과 치료를 받을 것이 아니라, 사람들을 살해하고 영웅이 될 수 있다고 착각하는 사람들이 나올 수 있다는 것입니다.
정신과 의사인 콘래드 덤 씨는 이같이 따라하는 행위를 ‘카피캣 행동’, 모방행위라고 설명했습니다.
덤 박사는 이같은 상황에서 종종 모방행위가 일어난다고 말했습니다. 특히 이번 사건과 같이 언론이 떠들썩하게 보도하는 경우에는 그럴 가능성이 있다는 것입니다.
그리고 실제로 그같은 가능성이 제기됐습니다. 이번주 캘리포니아 경찰은 스물여덟살난 청년을 체포했습니다. 이 청년은 친척들에게 버지니아 공과대학 사건이 별 것 아니라며, 이보다 더 한 일을 일으킬 계획이라고 말한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
또한 네바다주 리노의 네바다 대학교에서도 유사한 위협을 한 남자가 체포됐습니다. 뿐만 아니라 뉴저지주 테나플리에서는 폭파위협에 따라 지역 학교가 모두 페쇄됐습니다.
이같이 모방범죄 사건이 일어날 지도 모른다는 우려가 나오고 있긴 하지만 작가 버나드 골드버그 씨는 자신이 책임자였더라도 조승희의 동영상을 공개했을 것이라고 말했습니다. CBS 방송의 기자출신인 골드버그 씨는 어려운 일이긴 하지만 언론은 대중에게 사실을 알려야 할 책임이 있다고 말했습니다.
골드버그 씨는 자유 민주주의 사회에서는 비행기 납치 사건도 보도해야 하는 등 모방행위가 일어날 우려가 있더라도 알려야 한다고 설명했습니다.

In the aftermath of the worst mass murder in U.S. history, debate is growing over whether the media should have shown disturbing images sent by the killer to a TV news network. Some say releasing the video made by 23-year old Cho Seung-hui was insensitive and sensationalist, while some argue that the video gives insight into the mind of a killer.

The grieving continues as a tragic week draws to a close in the United States. But even as the makeshift memorials grow for the victims in the worst mass killing in U.S. history, so has the coverage given to the killer himself. Virginia Tech gunman Cho Seung-hui mailed a self-made video to U.S. broadcaster NBC on the morning of the shootings. Student Rana Fayez, says the images should not have been broadcast.
RANA FAYEZ, STUDENT:
"The people playing them have not lived here. They don't know the people, they don't feel what we're feeling. They don't understand that they're hurting us by playing them more."
The decision to air the videos has outraged relatives of some of the victims. Virginia Tech official Edward Spencer says widespread coverage only adds more hurt to what has been a painful week.

"I think we're still reeling from all of this. And that was not good to see that, on top of everything else."
Law enforcement officials say the tapes add very little to the investigation, but Thomas McIntyre, an expert on school shootings says it offers insight into the mind of a killer.
THOMAS MCINTYRE, SCHOOL SHOOTINGS EXPERT:
"Mr. Cho, like other school shooters, viewed himself as a victim. He was persecuted by others in his mind. And it was time to stop that and he was striking back at those who gave him hurt."
But others argue the ramblings of an irrational mind could inspire others to do the same. Jerald Newberry is head of the National Education Association.
JERALD NEWBERRY, NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION:
"By promoting the images that have been on TV the last 12 hours, we are promoting that if you are ill, rather than getting mental health support, you should go kill someone and be a hero."
Psychiatrist Conrad Daum calls it "copycat behavior".
DR. CONRAD DAUM, PSYCHIATRIST:
"And yes, it is a reality that it occurs frequently in situations like this, especially with the tremendous amount of publicity that this event caused."
And Dr. Daum may be right. This week, California police arrested a 28-year-old man for telling relatives he had a plan to quote, "make the Virginia Tech killings look mild".
In Nevada, police apprehended another man for allegedly making similar threats at the University of Nevada's Reno campus.
And in Tenafly, New Jersey, school officials closed all of its schools, following a bomb threat.
Although the copycat concerns are valid, author Bernard Goldberg told VOA News he would have aired Cho's tape. The former CBS News correspondent says it is a tough call but news organizations have a responsibility to inform the public.
BERNARD GOLDBERG, AUTHOR:
"If you live in a free country, in a democracy where information is what keeps it free, you have to cover hijackings. You have to cover certain kinds of stories, even if there's gonna be copycats."
The package that Cho sent to NBC contained a 23-page written statement, video clips and photos, along with references to the teenage killers in the Columbine High school massacre on April 20th, 1999. The tape has aired on all the major TV networks. On it, Cho refers to the killers as "martyrs". Criminal experts say that suggests Cho himself was a copycat killer.
