작년에 홍역이 번졌던 북한에서 모두 1,600여만명의 어린이와 성인들이 홍역예방접종을 받았습니다.
유엔아동기금, UNICEF는 20일 발표한 성명에서 세계보건기구와 국제적십자사가 지난 3월과 4월 두달에 걸쳐 북한 전역에서 북한 주민들을 대상으로 대대적인 홍역 예방접종을 실시했다고 밝혔습니다.
관계자들은 우선 1단계로 지난 3월에 600여만명의 어린이들이 예방접종을 받고, 이달 초에 끝난 2단계에서 어린이들과 16세에서 45세까지의 성인 1,000만명이 접종을 받았다고 말했습니다.
모든 참가자들에게는 예방접종 외에 면역체계에 필수적인 비타민A 1회분이 제공됐습니다.
국제적십자사와 적신월회는 지난해 11월 북한에서 홍역이 번지기 시작하면서 3,600여명의 북한 주민들이 이 전염병에 걸렸다고 밝혔습니다. 북한에서 이번 홍역으로 4명이 사망한 것으로 알려지고 있습니다.

More than 16 million children and adults in North Korea have been vaccinated for measles.
In a statement released today (Friday), UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the International Red Cross say the massive nationwide immunization program was carried out in March and April.
Officials say more than six million children were immunized in the first phase of the campaign, conducted in March. They say the second phase, which was completed earlier this month, targeted more than 10 million children and adults from 16 to 45 years of age.
In addition to the measles vaccine, all participants were also given a dose of Vitamin A, which health officials say is essential for the immune system.
