인도네시아 수마트라섬에서 강진이 발생해 적어도 70명이 사망하고 수 많은 사람들이 다쳤습니다. 현지 관계자들에 따르면 지역 병원은 현재 부상자들로 북새통을 이루고 있는 것으로 전해졌습니다.
미국 지질연구소는 현지시각으로 오늘 오전 서수마트라주의 주도인 파당으로부터 50 킬로미터 떨어진 지점에서 진도 6.3 의 강진이 발생했다고 말했습니다. 지질 연구소는 2시간 뒤 다시 진도 6.1 의 여진이 이 지역에서 발생했다고 덧붙였습니다.
이번 강진으로 일부 건물이 붕괴되고 주택과 다른 건물 여러채가 크게 파손됐습니다. 지진이 발생하자 놀란 지역 주민들과 병원 환자들이 건물 밖으로 대피하는 소동이 벌어졌습니다.
이번 강진으로 인해 얼마나 많은 부상자가 발생했는지는 즉각 알려지지 않고 있습니다.
이번 강진은 수백 킬로미터 떨어진 말레이시아에서도 감지됐으며 싱가포르에서는 여러 빌딩들이 흔들리기도 했습니다.

Astrong earthquake has hit Indonesia's Sumatra island, killing at least 70 people and leaving hospitals and other medical facilities overwhelmed with the injured.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude six-point-three earthquake struck earlier today (Tuesday), 50 kilometers from West Sumatra's provincial capital, Padang. Two hours later, an aftershock of magnitude six-point-one struck the area again.
Some buildings have collapsed and several homes and other buildings are badly damaged. The quake caused panicked residents of Sumatra to run from buildings, including patients in a hospital in Padang.
It is not immediately clear how many people have been injured.
The quake was felt hundreds of kilometers away in Malaysia and prompted the evacuation of several buildings in Singapore.
No tsunami warning was issued. Reports say electricity in some areas of Sumatra has been cut off.
