미국의 데이비드 페트라우스 육군 장군이 새 이라크 주둔 미군 사령관으로 취임했습니다. 페트라우스 장군의 취임식은 10일 바그다드 외곽에 있는 미군 기지 ‘캠프 빅토리’에서 열렸습니다.
조지 케이시 장군 후임으로 취임한 페트라우스 장군은 이라크 문제는 심각하지만 전혀 희망이 없는 상황은 아니며 성공을 거둘 수 있는 전망이 밝다고 말했습니다.
페트라우스 장군은 미군과 이라크군은 폭력사태를 종식시키기 위해 계속 협력해야 한다고 말했습니다.
페트라우스 장군은 실패한다면 이라크에서는 폭력과 내전이 계속되는 등 파멸에 이르게될 것이라고 말했습니다.
페트라우스 장군은 이라크 치안을 강화하기 위해 2만1천5백명을 추가로 파견하려는 부시 대통령의 이라크 주둔 미군 증파계획을 감독하게 됩니다.
지난달 미 국회 상원의 군사위원회 청문회에 참석한 페트라우스 장군은 이라크의 치안상황이 지난해 심각하게 악화됐다고 말했습니다.

General David Petraeus has taken control of U.S. forces in Iraq.
General Petraeus succeeded General George Casey in a change of command ceremony today (Saturday) at Camp Victory, a U.S. base on the outskirts of Baghdad.
General Petraeus said (today / Saturday) said the stakes in Iraq are high, but the situation is not hopeless, and prospects for success are good. He said U.S. and Iraqi forces need to continue to work together in controlling violence. The general warned failure would mean that Iraq - in his words - "will be doomed to continued violence and civil strife."
The new Iraq commander will oversee President Bush's plan to send an additional 21-thousand-500 troops to Iraq to bolster security.
Last month, General Petraeus told the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee the security situation in Iraq had deteriorated significantly in the past year.
