(Eng)

Activists hunting a Japanese whaling fleet off Antarctica (in the Ross Sea) say they will pay a 25-thousand-dollar reward to anyone who can help them locate the elusive ships.

The U.S.-based, Sea-Shepherd Conservation Society announced the reward during its mission to disrupt Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean. The group needs the coordinates to track down the ships before its own pursuing vessels would run out of fuel in a few weeks.

The New Zealand government, which opposes Japan's whaling, had filmed the fleet but has refused to disclose its exact location.

Although a global moratorium on commercial whaling has existed since 1986, Japan kills hundreds of whales each year under a scientific whaling program. Iceland and Norway are the only other countries to ignore the moratorium and conduct commercial hunts.
