Nepal's former Maoist rebels have begun placing their weapons under the surveillance of the United Nations.
Today's (Wednesday's) handover is a key part of a peace process aimed at ending a decade-long conflict with the government that has killed some 13-thousand people.
Officials say the Maoists are not surrendering their weapons, but instead are registering and storing them in seven U.N. containment areas. The former rebels will keep keys to the containers.
U.N. monitors and a group of Nepali Gurkha soldiers will be monitoring the process.
The rebels and government officials signed a power-sharing agreement in November to begin integrating Maoist fighters into a new government.
Eighty-three Maoists took seats in a 330-member interim legislature on Monday, after the adoption of a temporary constitution.
