(Eng)

If you're looking for the secret to a long life, you might consider to a trip to the U.S. state of New Jersey. According to a study by Harvard University, Asian-American women in one of New Jersey's 21 counties live longer than any other group in the United States. Malcolm Brown went to New Jersey for VOA to find out why.

The Harvard study found that here in Bergen County, New Jersey Asian-American women lead the nation in longevity. On average, they live to be 91 years old.

This is probably as good a place as any to examine possible reasons for that long life -- a community center in Englewood serving Korean-Americans. Traditional Korean dance is just one of the activities for seniors.

Founder Ma Kye-eun is a strong proponent of healthy and independent living.

MA KYE-EUN, KOREAN COMMUNITY CENTER PRESIDENT "Of course you have to [be] secure financially and also [have] health. You have to keep your healthy lifestyle, to prevent any chronic diseases and even though you have chronic diseases, you can control only - so you prevent complications."

For these women, a healthy lifestyle involves activities ranging from singing?

Many of the women go on from these activities to look after grandchildren in the afternoon. It's a busy schedule, in keeping with the community's emphasis on hard work and family.

MA KYE-EUN, KOREAN COMMUNITY CENTER PRESIDENT "An Asian woman's happiness is to help family and see the family happy and healthy. Actually you work for the others."

Another factor in the long life of Asian-Americans in Bergen County may be their diet. Hong Kay credits the spicy fermented cabbage dish kimchi, a Korean staple.

HONG KAY, COMMUNITY CENTER VOLUNTEER "By now, the whole world knows about kimchi and that makes us strong, and healthy ingredients in it that prevent some kind of infectious disease."

The Harvard study of life spans found that the areas where people live, income and race all are factors in longevity, which varies widely.

On average, the Asian women here in Bergen County can expect to live more than 30 years longer than Americans at the bottom end of the national scale. Malcolm Brown for VOA News, in New Jersey.
