조지 부시 미국 대통령은 1일 고 제럴드 포드 전 미국 대통령의 유해가 안치돼 있는 이곳 워싱턴의 의회 의사당을 방문해 애도의 뜻을 표했습니다.
부시 대통령과 부인 로라 부시 여사는 포드 전 대통령의 관 앞에서 잠시동안 묵념을 하고나서 의사당을 떠났습니다. 부시 대통령 내외는 지난 30일 거행된 포드 전 대통령의 국장에는 참석하지 않았습니다.
이에 앞서 이날 포드 전 대통령의 딸과 친척들은 의회 의사당에서 조문객들을 맞이했습니다.
이들은 성조기로 덮인 포드 전 대통령의 관 주위를 돌며 고인을 추모하는 조문객들과 악수를하며 인사를 나눴습니다.
제38대 미국 대통령을 지낸 포드 전 대통령의 영결식은 2일 워싱턴 국립성당에서 열릴 예정이고 그의 유해는 그 다음날인 3일 미 중서부 미시간 주의 고향 마을인 그랜드 라피즈에 안장될 예정입니다.
포드 전 대통령은 지난 26일 미 서부 캘리포니아 주 자택에서 향년 93세를 일기로 타계했습니다.

President Bush has paid his respects to the late U.S. President Gerald Ford at the Capitol Building in Washington, where Mr. Ford's remains are lying in state.
The president and First Lady Laura Bush entered the Capitol Rotunda this afternoon (Monday), paused for a few seconds near the casket, and departed. They did not attend the state funeral held for Mr. Ford on Saturday.
Earlier today, Mr. Ford's daughter (Susan Ford Bales) and other relatives stood near their father's flag-draped coffin, shaking hands and exchanging greetings with people as they passed by.
Since Sunday, a steady stream of mourners has paid respect to the man who assumed the presidency after Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974.
On Tuesday, there will be a memorial service for Mr. Ford at the National Cathedral in Washington. The 38th president will be buried Wednesday in his hometown of Grand Rapids, (in the midwestern state of) Michigan.
Mr. Ford died at the age of 93 last Tuesday at his home in (the western state of) California.
