Pope Benedict says he is deeply distressed by what he calls the illegitimate ordination of a Chinese bishop this week in Beijing.
China's government-controlled Catholic Church announced Thursday that it had ordained 36-year-old Wang Renlei as bishop of Xuzhou, in the eastern province of Jiangsu. He is the third bishop that the so-called Patriotic Catholic Association of China has ordained without papal approval.
The pope gave his first reaction to the ordination today (Saturday) in a written statement released by the Vatican. He called it a very serious act that offends the religious feelings of every Catholic in China and the rest of the world.
Beijing and the Vatican severed ties in the 1950s. China established a government-controlled church that pledges its loyalty to the state rather than to the pope.
