레바논의 파우드 시니오라 총리는 레바논은 반 시리아계 정치인 피에르 게마일 (Pierre Gemayel)의 암살범들에 의해 위협받지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다. 시니오라 총리의 이같은 발언은 기독교계 게마일산업장관이 21일 수도 베이루트 외곽에서 암살된지 몇 시간 뒤에 나왔습니다.
목격자들은 무장괴한들이 한 기독교인 거주지역에서 자신들이 타고 있던 차량을 게마일 장관이 탄 차량에 추돌시킨 뒤 총격을 가했다고 전했습니다. 34세의 게마일 장관은 병원으로 옮겨졌으나 사망했습니다.
시니오라 총리는 국가 단합을 촉구하면서 레바논은 범법자들이 레바논의 미래를 정하도록 허용하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다. 그는 또 레바논은 작년에 발생한 라피크 하리리 전 레바논 총리 암살 사건의 용의자들을 회부할 국제재판소를 설립하기 위해 단결해야한다고 강조했습니다.
레바논에서는 지난 2년 동안 게마일 장관을 포함한 여러 반 시리아계 정치인사들이 암살됐습니다. 유엔의 조사결과, 하리리 전 총리의 피살 사건에는 시리아 정부 관리들이 연루된 것으로 밝혀진바 있습니다. 시리아 정부는 이날 국영통신 사나 (SANA)를 통해 게마일 장관의 암살사건을 비난하는 메시지를 전했습니다.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora says Lebanon will not be intimidated by the killers of anti-Syrian politician Pierre Gemayel.
Mr. Siniora spoke hours after the Christian Cabinet minister was gunned down outside Beirut today (Tuesday).
Witnesses say the attackers rammed their vehicle into Gemayel's car and riddled it with bullets. The 34-year-old minister died at a hospital.
Prime Minister Siniora called for unity, and said the country will not allow criminals to dictate its future. He said Lebanon must stand united for the creation of an international tribunal to try suspects in last year's assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Gemayel was the latest in a number of anti-Syrian politicians who have been assassinated in Lebanon over the past two years. A United Nations inquiry has implicated Syrian officials in the Hariri killing.
Syrian condemned Gemayel's assassination in a message carried on the official Syrian news agency SANA.
Gemayel's father, former Lebanese President Amin Gemayel, appealed for calm.
In Washington, U.S. Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns denounced the attack as an act of terrorism.
