지난 7일에 실시된 미국 중간선거결과 민주당이 상원에서도 다수 의석을 차지해 국회 상하 양원을 모두 장악했다고 미국의 두 주요 언론사가 보도했습니다.
미국의 AP 통신과 공중파 텔레비젼 방송인 NBC 방송은 미국 남부 버지니아 주에서 민주당의 짐 웹 후보가 현 버지니아주 상원의원인 공화당소속 조지 알렌 후보를 물리치고 승리했다고 보도했습니다.
웹 후보는 총 2백여만표 가운데 알렌 후보 보다 약 7천여표를 더 획득한 것으로 집계됐습니다.
알렌 의원은 아직까지 패배를 시인하지않고 있으며 지방 관리들이 재검토를 마칠 때까지 기다릴 것이라고 알렌 의원의 선거운동 본부 측은 밝혔습니다.
그러나 알렌 의원은 웹 후보가 승리한 것으로 나오면 재검표를 요구하진 않을 것이라고 한 보좌관이 말했습니다.
현재 야당인 민주당은 이미 하원 다수당의 위치를 확보했으며 버지니아 주에서 웹 후보의 승리가 확정될 경우 지난 1994년 이후 처음으로 상하 양원을 모두 장악하게 됩니다.
미국의 조지 부시 대통령은 선거결과에 실망감을 나타냈으나 민주, 공화 양 당이 함께 협력할 것을 촉구했습니다.

Two U.S. media organizations have declared that the Democratic Party has won a majority in the U.S. Senate, and with it, complete control of the U.S. Congress following Tuesday's midterm elections.
NBC and the Associated Press say Democratic challenger Jim Webb is the winner over Republican Senator George Allen in (the southern U.S. state of) Virginia. Webb holds a lead of about seven-thousand votes, out of more than two-million ballots cast.
Allen has not conceded defeat, and his campaign says he will wait until a re-check of the vote counting is completed by local officials. But one advisor says Allen has no intention of seeking a recount if the votes remain in Webb's favor.
The opposition Democrats had already swept to victory in the House of Representatives, With Webb's victory, they would control both chambers of Congress for the first time since 1994.
President Bush has expressed disappointment with the election results, but called on both political parties to work together. He will meet separately today (Thursday) with Republican and Democratic congressional leaders.
