A Japanese court has issued an arrest warrant for a North Korean woman accused of abducting two Japanese citizens to be trained as spies.
The court today (Thursday) issued a warrant for Kim Myung Sook, who is accused of kidnapping Hitomi Soga and her mother, Miyoshi Soga, in 1978. Pyongyang allowed Hitomi Soga to return to Japan in 2002 but says her mother Miyoshi died in North Korea.
Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yasuhisa Shiozaki, said Tokyo plans to ask Pyongyang to hand over the suspect, who is believed to be in her 70s or 80s and living in North Korea.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters today that Japan must make further efforts to save abduction victims.
North Korea admitted in 2002 to kidnapping Japanese citizens to train North Korean spies in the Japanese language and culture.
