미국의 도널드 럼스펠드 국방장관은 아프가니스탄에서 탈레반 정권이 무너진 지 5년이 지난 가운데 아프가니스탄에 대해 낙관할 만한 이유가 있다고 말했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 7일자 워싱톤 포스트 신문에 실린 기고문에서 아프가니스탄에서 아편생산이 증가하고 남부지역에서 폭력사태가 계속되고있음에도 불구하고 장래가 희망적이며 앞으로 상황이 개선될 것으로 본다고 말했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 지난 5년동안 아프가니스탄 경제가 세배로 성장했으며, 군 병력이 한달에 천명씩 늘어났고, 학교에 다니는 학생들의 수가 5배 증가했다고 지적했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 또한 마약생산이 증가하고 폭력분자들에 의한 폭력행위가 늘어나는 등 일부 악화된 점도 있다고 시인했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says there is reason for optimism in Afghanistan five years after the fall of the Taleban.
In an opinion piece in today's (Saturday's) "Washington Post" newspaper, Rumsfeld wrote that despite Afghanistan's rising opium production and violence in the south, "the trajectory is a hopeful and promising one."
The secretary cited several improvements including an economy that has tripled in five years, a military that has grown by one thousand soldiers a month and a 500 percent increase in children attending school.
Rumsfeld also mentioned a few setbacks, including a surge in drug production and rising violence by insurgents.
