국제적인 작가들이 올 가을 초에 미국 뉴욕의 할렘 지역에서 열린 한 축제에 대거 모여 책과 무대를 통해 야심작들을 선보였습니다. 지난달 29일 부터 이달 1일까지 열린 이번 책의 축제에 대해 미국의 소리 특파원이 좀 더 자세한 소식 전해드립니다.
사흘간 열린 제 1회 ‘ 업 싸우스 국제 책 축제 (UpSouth International Book Festival)’에서는 다양한 환경과 국적의 공연자들 및 작가들의 작품과 공연이 발표 됐습니다. 이들은 멀게는 멕시코, 쿠바, 에콰도르, 트리니다드와 시에라 리온 등에서 그리고 가깝게는 뉴욕시 빈민구역, 할렘에서도 왔습니다. 여기서 이번 축제의 이름이 영어의 속어적 표현인 업싸우스로 부쳐진 것은, 남미 지역과 미국 남부지역 출신 작가들이 많이 참가했기 때문입니다.
축제의 창립자인 말라이카 아데로 (Malaika Adero)씨는 이번 축제는 대중의 교화를 위한 예술과 도구로서의 이야기 낭독, 영어로 스토리 텔링을 재조명하기 위해서 개막됐다고 말합니다.
아데로씨는 이번 축제는 훌륭한 이야기 낭독 방식을 알리고 또 무엇보다도 훌륭한 책들과 책의 저자들을 알리는데 목적을 뒀다고 말합니다. 아데로씨는 문학을 이야기 회술의 수단 외에도 춤, 음악, 영화 등 사람들이 이야기를 하는데 사용하는 모든 형태로 기념하는데 축제의 목적이 있다고 설명합니다. 또, 기념하는데 있어서 다양함에서 나오는 훌륭함을 선보이는데도 축제의 목적이 있다고 말합니다.
축제의 참가자들에는 배우 겸 운동가인 루비 디 (Ruby Dee)가 포함돼있었습니다. 디씨는 자신의 책 ‘어떤 거시적 통찰력으로 밝아진 인생” (Life Lit by Some Large Vision)을 읽었는데, 이 책은 배우였던 그녀의 남편, 오시 데이비스(Ossie Davis)가 생전에 행 한 연설들의 모음집입니다.
퓰리처 수상 작가인 오스카 하이율러스 (Oscar Hijuelos)씨는 자신의 책 ‘쿠바는 시이다 (Cuba is… Poetry)’를 두가지 언어, 스페인어와 영어로 읽었습니다.
축제 창립자, 아데로씨는 다양한 문화의 작가들이 한자리에 모여 동료 작가들과 관중들과 관계를 맺을 수 있는 새로운 장을 마련하기 위해 축제를 창립했다고 말합니다.
아데로씨는 이번 축제는 예술가들이 다른 분야에 종사하는 예술가들과 만날 수 있는 기회였다고 말합니다. 또, 관중들이 공연자들 및 작가들과 친밀하게 만나고 그들과 관계를 맺을 수 있는 기회였다고 그녀는 말합니다. 이번 축제는 대화의 장과 각종 경계선을 뛰어넘는 공동체를 만드는데 의미를 두고 있다고 아데로씨는 강조합니다.
배우 루비 디씨는 이야기 방식은 텔레비전을 비롯한 다른 매체들로 인해 새로운 여러 형태들을 취하게 됐지만 책은 그 자체의 매력을 영원히 잃지 않을 것이라고 말합니다.
디씨는 책에는 텔레비전으로는 볼 수 없는 여러 차원들이 있다고 말합니다. 독서를 하는데 있어서 텔레비전이나 라디오를 통해 듣는 것이 완전치 못함을 깨닫게 하는 그 무언가가 있다고 디씨는 말합니다.
아데로씨는 매년 축제를 계속해서 확대시키기를 바랍니다. 축제의 임무는 시대를 초월하기 때문이라고 그녀는 말합니다. 인간은 글이 만들어지기 훨씬 전서부터 이야기에 의존해왔다고 아데로씨는 말합니다.

In early autumn, an array of international artists presented their best on the page and on the stage in the Harlem section of New York City. The presentation is part of a new festival celebrating storytelling through books and performance.The three-day UpSouth International Book Festival presented works and performances by artists and writers of various backgrounds and nationalities. Some came from as far away as Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador, Trinidad and Sierra Leone; others as close as Harlem.
Festival founder Malaika Adero says it was launched to shine a light on contemporary storytelling as an art and tool for enlightenment.
"The purpose is to promote great storytelling, to promote primarily great books and the people who make them," she said. "To celebrate literature as a storytelling medium, but also to celebrate dance, music, film, all the forms in which we use to tell our stories and to do so in a way that showcases the brilliance of diversity."
Guests of the festival included actor and activist Ruby Dee, who read from her book Life Lit by Some Large Vision, a compilation of speeches by her late husband, actor Ossie Davis. Another writer, Pulitzer Prize winner Oscar Hijuelos, read from his book Cuba Is ... Poetry in both Spanish and English.
Adero says her goal in starting the festival is to bring together a multi-cultural group of artists so they have a new platform to connect with each other and with audiences.
"It is an opportunity for artists to meet other artists doing other kinds of work," she said. "It is an opportunity for the audience to meet artists and authors in an intimate way and engage with them. It is very much about creating a dialog and creating community across all kinds of boundaries."
Actor Ruby Dee says although storytelling has taken on various new forms because of television and other media, books will never lose their allure.
"There are dimensions that we can get from books that are not possible on television. There is something about seeing it in the book, that hearing on television and the radio does not satisfy," she said.
Adero hopes to continue to expand the festival each year, because she says the mission of the festival is timeless. Humans, she says, have been telling stories since long before the written word.
