일본과 중국을 비롯한 아시아 지역을 강타한 한국 대중 문화에 대한 열기, 이른바 한류 열풍이 미국에도 불고 있습니다. 먼저 하와이를 휩쓴 한국 드라마와 영화, 대중 음악들이 이제는 미국 본토에도 상륙하기 시작한 것입니다. 하와이에서 미국의 소리 VOA 특파원이 보내온 자세한 소식입니다.
한국의 가수 겸 영화배우인 김민종이 올해 하와이 호눌룰루에서 공연했습니다. 많은 사람들이 한국어로 부르는 이 노래의 뜻을 전혀 이해하지 못했음에도 불구하고, 청중들의 반응은 열광적이었습니다.
금발에 푸른 눈을 가진 소녀로서 한국의 대중 문화를 무척 좋아한다는 이 소녀는 한국 드라마를 많이 봤다면서, 거기에는 자신의 마음을 사로잡는 무엇인가가 있다고 말했습니다.
또 다른 흑인인 한 사람은 한국의 드라마들은 미국 드라마들에 비해서 건전한 내용을 담고 있기 때문에 좋다고 말했습니다.
이 사람들은 한국의 드라마에 푹 빠진 사람들입니다. 한국 드라마에 담긴 사랑 이야기, 잘 생긴 배우들, 가족의 가치, 그리고 음악을 좋아하고 있습니다. 대부분의 드라마 줄거리들이 대단히 감동적이기 때문에, 많이 울고 많이 웃는다고 말했습니다.
또한 한국의 드라마들은 오래된 것이긴 하지만 여전히 사람들이 좋아하는 방식의 사랑 이야기를 담고 있습니다. 하지만 미국의 드라마와는 달리 과도한 폭력이나 성적인 표현은 다루지 않습니다.
올해 60살인 노라 무라모토 씨가 한국 드라마를 좋아하는 이유는 바로 그 때문입니다. 미국 드라마는 너무나 폭력적이고 성적인 표현도 많은데 비해 한국 드라마는 너무 깨끗하다는 것입니다. 무라모토 씨는 또한 한국 드라마에 나오는 남자 주인공들의 카리스마적이고 다정 다감한 성격에도 끌리고 있습니다.
무슨 일이든 자신의 뜻대로만 하는 전형적인 일본의 무사 같은 남자와 결혼한 일본계 미국인 여성이라고 자신을 소개하면서, 하지만 한국 드라마의 남자 주인공들은 다정 다감하고 부인에게 관심을 가질 뿐 아니라 대화도 많이 한다고 말했습니다.
무라모토 씨는 좋아하는 한국의 드라마들이 촬영된 곳들을 방문하기 위해 한국에 두 번이나 다녀왔습니다. 무라마토 씨는 친구인 게리 나카무라 씨와 함께 몇 년 전에 하와이 한국 드라마 동호인 회를 만들었습니다. 나카무라 씨는 한국의 드라마들이 문화적 유대감을 일깨운다고 말했습니다.
한국 드라마에 나오는 예쁘고 잘 생긴 사람들이 자신과 같은 아시아 인으로서 영웅이나 스타가 될 수 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 되면서, 그런 현상에 유대감을 느낀다고 덧붙였습니다. 하와이에서는 20여 년 전부터 한국 드라마들이 방송되고 있습니다.
하와이의 KBFD 방송국은 1989년에 세계 최초로 한국 드라마들을 영어 자막과 함께 방송하기 시작했습니다. 이 방송국의 총 책임자인 제프 정 씨는 한국 드라마 중 겨울 연가를 가장 좋아한다면서 일본과 호눌룰루에서 큰 인기를 끌었던 겨울 연가야 말로 세계에서 한국 대중 문화와 한국 드라마 열풍을 촉발시킨 드라마였다고 설명했습니다.
정 씨는 지난 2002년에 겨울 연가를 방송하면서 시청율과 광고비 수입이 크게 증가했다고 말했습니다. 겨울 연가는 사고로 죽었다고 생각했던 첫 사랑과 다시 만난는다는 내용이 담긴 동화같은 사랑이야기라고 정 씨는 설명했습니다.
몇 년 씩 계속되는 미국의 드라마와는 달리 한국의 드라마들은 보통 16회에서 20회로 끝이 납니다. 하와이 대학교의 테오도르 준 유 교수는 한국 드라마를 이용해 학생들에게 한국 문화를 가르치고 있습니다. 유 교수가 가장 좋아하는 드라마는 대장금입니다.
16세기를 배경하는 하는 이 역사 드라마는 온갖 고난을 딛고 여성으로는 최초로 왕의 주치의가 된 한 불쌍한 고아의 실화를 바탕으로 하고 있습니다. 조선 시대는 상당히 남성 중심 사회였는데, 여성이 온갖 시련을 극복한 이야기는 상당히 고무적이면서도 재미있다고 유교수는 말했습니다.
대장금 같은 드라마는 하와이 전역을 휩쓸고 이제 미국 본토에 상륙하기 시작한 한국 드라마와 영화, 음악 등을 일컫는 한류의 일부 입니다. 이제는 로스엔젤레스와 샌프란시스코, 시카고와 뉴욕 같은 대도시의 텔레비전 방송국들에서도 한국 드라마를 방송하고 있습니다. 2003년 부터는 영어 자막이 들어간 DVD 도 판매되고 있습니다.
마운틴 애플 사는 1년 여 전부터 한국 드라마 DVD를 배급하고 있는데, 판매가 계속 증가하고 있습니다. 이 회사의 레아 번스타인 회장은 그 이유를 알고 있다고 생각합니다. 한국 드라마들은 시작과 끝이 분명하고 또한 주제가 뚜렷하기 때문에 사람들이 매료되고 있다면서, 사람들의 기분을 좋게 만든다고 덧붙였습니다.
미국 영화계인 헐리웃도 역시 호감을 갖고 있습니다. 벌써 12편 이상의 한국 영화들의 미국판 작품들이 제작되기 시작됐습니다. 첫번째 작품으로는 한국의 환상적인 로맨스 영화 '시월애'를 호수가집이란 뜻인 [The Lake House]란 제목으로 리메이크한 영화가 올해 개봉됐습니다.

Millions of Americans follow the romances, feuds and misadventures of the characters on television soap operas. Many of these daytime melodramas have been on the air for decades, and their successful formula has been reproduced in evening prime-time series. Other countries produce these dramas, as well, and South Korean productions have a growing American audience. As we hear from Heidi Chang, their followers don't get much more passionate than the fans in Hawaii:
When South Korean singer and actor Kim Min Jong performed in Honolulu earlier this year, fans went wild, even though many didn't even know what he was crooning about.
[I'm a] blond-haired, blue-eyed Korean fan girl.
Rptr: Why?
Because I really love, I love the Korean culture, love the movies to death. I like a lot of the dramas, um, there's just something about it that just grab me.
I'm an African American and I really enjoy the fact that the Korean dramas are really wholesome, they're a lot more wholesome, in their story lines than the American soap operas.
These fans are addicted to Korean television dramas. They say they love the story lines, the good-looking actors, the family values and the music.
Most of the stories, they're highly emotional. So you cry a lot, you laugh a lot.
Korean dramas also feature plenty of good old-fashioned romance. But unlike American soaps, there's no steamy sex or violence. That's what appeals to 60-year-old Nora Muramoto.
American dramas are too violent, I mean they were getting too violent and too much sex involved. And after seeing Korean dramas it was so clean.
Muramoto is also drawn to the charismatic and sensitive male characters in the dramas.
As a Japanese-American woman married to a typical Japanese samurai guy, whatever he says goes. And he tends to wear the pants [be the authority] in the family. Whereas the Korean soap opera guys, they're more compassionate, caring, they take care of their wives and you know they communicate well.
Muramoto has gone to South Korea twice to visit the locations where her favorite Korean dramas were filmed. [END OPT] A few years ago, she founded the Hawaii K-Drama Fan Club, with her friend Gerrie Nakamura, who says the dramas inspire a cultural connection.
When Korean dramas came out, I knew that out there, there were pretty, handsome and Asian, just like me, people, that were able to be heroes, you know, they could be the stars and they could be the hunks and I felt connected to that.
Korean dramas have been on the air in Hawaii for more than twenty years, longer than anywhere else in the United States. 38-year-old Korean-American, Jeff Chung, is general manager of KBFD, which in 1989 became the first station in the world to broadcast the dramas with English subtitles.
My favorite Korean drama is Winter Sonata, it is the drama that really sparked the whole Korean pop culture and Korean drama craze in the world.

It was extremely popular in Japan and as well in Honolulu.
Chung says his audience and revenues really grew in 2002 with the broadcast of Winter Sonata.
It's a fairytale love story, about finding your first love, when you thought that person had passed away in an accident. And it's a great story.
Unlike the stories on American soap operas, which can continue for years, Korean dramas usually end after 16 or 20 episodes. Theodore Jun Yoo uses the dramas to teach students about Korean culture in his history classes at the University of Hawaii. The professor's favorite mini-series is Dae Jang Geum or Jewel in the Palace. The historical drama, set in the 16th century, is based on a true story about a poor orphan, who beats the odds to become the king's first female physician.
For those who don't know the Chosun period, it was a very patriarchal society. And to see a woman deal with all kinds of tribulations and overcome them, I think is extremely empowering, but also entertaining.
TV dramas like Jewel in the Palace are part of what's being called the Korean Wave - dramas, movies and pop music from South Korea that have swept across the Hawaiian Islands and are starting to catch on, on the U.S. mainland. [OPT] Korean dramas are now being shown on TV stations in major cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York. [END OPT] They've been available on DVD with English subtitles since 2003. The Mountain Apple Company began distributing them more than a year ago, and their sales have grown continuously. Company president, Leah Bernstein says she thinks she knows why.
The story has a beginning, it has an end. It has a point. And people are really gravitating towards it. It makes you feel good.
Hollywood feels good, too, … good enough to begin producing U.S. versions of more than a dozen Korean films. The first, a remake of the South Korean romantic fantasy 'Il Mare' [il MAH-ray] - also known as 'Siworae' [she-WOOL-ay] - was released earlier this year as "The Lake House."
