Iran is downplaying reports that it is prepared to suspend uranium enrichment for a limited period, describing the reports as premature.
E.U. diplomats had said in recent days that Iran offered to suspend enrichment for two months to clear the way for negotiations with world powers on its nuclear program.
But, an Iranian government spokesman (Gholam Hossein Elham) said today (Monday) that Tehran has not yet come to a decision on the matter, and talks are continuing with E.U. officials.
French President Jacques Chirac says that if Tehran agrees to a suspension of enrichment, the international community should not refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council over its nuclear activities.
Mr. Chirac made the comment in a European radio interview today (Monday). He proposed that five other world powers (the United States, Britain, Russia, China and Germany) meet with France to set an agenda for negotiations with Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute.
