France has confirmed that Iran's chief nuclear negotiator said his country is ready to discuss suspending its uranium enrichment program.
A French foreign ministry spokesman (Jean-Baptiste Mattei) described the Iranian position as a "positive development." He said Iranian negotiator Ali Larijani made the statement during talks with the European Union's foreign policy chief (Javier Solana) on Saturday and Sunday in Vienna.
So far, Iran has ignored an August 31st United Nations Security Council deadline to suspend uranium enrichment.
On Thursday, the United States said it was confident the Security Council will ultimately impose sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.
But a State Department spokesman (Sean McCormack) said that the diplomacy leading to sanctions will be, in his words, "complex" and "sometimes hard-fought."
The United States and many of its European allies believe Iran is enriching uranium as part of a program to build nuclear weapons -- a charge Iran denies.
