중국은 경제 개혁을 더욱 가속화해야한다고 미국의 헨리 폴슨 재무장관이 촉구했습니다. 폴슨 장관은 13일 워싱턴에서 가진 한 연설에서 이같이 말하고 부쉬 행정부는 중국을 경쟁국이 아닌 동반자로 함께 일할 뜻을 같고 있다고 말했습니다.
폴슨 장관은 또 중국이 지구촌 경제 주도국으로서 책임을 갖고 무역과 투자의 개방 요구를 기꺼이 받아들여야 한다고 말했습니다. 폴슨 장관은 미국 국회의원들이 점증하는 미국과 중국간 무역 격차와 관련해 중국에 제재를 검토하고 있는가운데 이렇게 말했습니다.
다음주 중국을 방문해 정부 관리들과 만날 예정인 폴슨 장관은 미국 국회의원들에게 이번 방문에서 곧바로 해결책 도출을 기대하지 말라며 주위를 미리 환기했습니다.
중국 관리들은 지난 11일 중국의 지난달 무역 흑자가 1백 88억달러를 기록해 지난해 같은 기간보다 80 퍼센트가 증가했다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has called on China to open up its economy to reform.
During a speech in Washington (Wednesday), Paulson said the Bush administration intends to work with China as a partner, not an adversary. He also said China should accept its economic responsibilities as a global economic leader, and embrace open trade and investment.
His comments come as U.S. lawmakers consider measures to punish Beijing for its growing trade gap with the United States.
Paulson is expected to meet with Chinese officials next week, and has cautioned American lawmakers not to expect immediate results from the visit.
Earlier this week, Chinese officials said the country exported a record 18-point-eight billion dollars worth of goods more than it imported last month -- an 80-percent increase from the same time last year.
