조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 29일 뉴올리언즈 시는 이곳의 어린이들이 집으로 돌아오기를 원한다고 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 이날 태풍 카트리나 1주년을 맞이하는 행사의 일환으로 한 고등학교에서 연설하면서 이같이 말했습니다.
이 고등학교는 지난해 태풍 카트리나로 도시 제방이 무너졌을 때 파손됐으며 며칠 이내에 다시 개교하기로 돼 있습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 홍수 피해가 발생하던 당시 교실들이 수심 3미터에 아래로 잠겼었다고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 또, 뉴올리언즈 도시와 이 지역의 회복을 돕기 위해 모든 일을 다 할 것이라고 거듭 다짐했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 카트리나 참사 당시 뉴올리언즈 주민들이 보여준 용기 있는 행동과 계속되는 복구 노력을 일컬어 “가장 최고의 미국”이라고 칭송했습니다. 하지만 뉴올리언즈에서 가장 큰 피해를 입은 지역의 가옥들은 상당수가 아직도 무너진 채로 있고 일부 지역의 경우 물과 전기 등 기본 서비스가 부족한 상태입니다.
뉴올리언즈시의 현재 인구는 카트리나 이전의 절반 가량인 20만명으로 줄었습니다. 한편 복구작업이 지연되면서 부쉬 행정부와 주 정부 및 시 정부에는 많은 비판이 쏟아졌습니다.
미국의 국립허리케인센터는 태풍 카트리나가 루이지애나와 미시시피, 앨러바마 등지를 강타하면서 천8백여명이 사망했다고 밝혔습니다.

President Bush told an audience in New Orleans today (Tuesday) that the city wants her children to come home.
Mr. Bush spoke at a high school as part of events marking the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The school is set to re-open in a few days, after being damaged when Katrina's force overcame the city's floodwalls last year.
Mr. Bush said that during the flood the school's classrooms were under three meters of water.
Mr. Bush also renewed his vow to do whatever it takes to help the city and the region recover. He praised the city's residents for their acts of courage during the disaster and the ongoing recovery, calling them "the very best of America."
But many homes in New Orleans' hardest hit neighborhoods are still in ruins, and some areas still lack basic services such as water and electricity. The city's population is around 200-thousand today, about half of what it was before the storm.
The lack of recovery in the city has generated a lot of criticism for the Bush administration, and for local and state governments.
Katrina was one of the most destructive storms in U.S. history. The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Katrina left more than 18-hundred people dead and several hundred more missing when it devastated parts of the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
