Chinese state media say a bird flu vaccine developed by local researchers for humans has proved safe in its first round of tests.
The Xinhua news agency reports today (Monday) Chinese researchers began work on the vaccine last year, and that it has passed preliminary tests for safety and effectiveness. The vaccine must pass more tests to be approved for human use.
Chinese authorities say if the vaccine goes on the market, it will be meant for high-risk groups, like poultry workers.
Various companies around the world are racing to develop a vaccine against the deadly H5N1 virus, which has killed at least 140 people worldwide, 14 of them in China.
Although most victims contracted the disease from sick poultry, health experts are concerned the virus could mutate into a form easily passed between humans.
