Security alerts have forced the diversion or evacuation of U.S. and Irish trans-Atlantic flights.
U.S. officials say an American Airlines plane, on a flight from Manchester, England, to Chicago was diverted to Bangor Airport in (the northeastern U.S. state of) Maine in response to a security threat. The officials provided no details.
Earlier, Irish authorities evacuated an Aer Lingus plane at Shannon Airport following a bomb scare.
Police interviewed all 239 passengers on the New York-to-Dublin flight on its scheduled stop at Shannon (in southwestern Ireland). Authorities also removed and searched all of the baggage.
An airport spokeswoman says the threat was called in to a police station in Dublin, suggesting there were explosives on the aircraft.
The spokeswoman says passengers booked to travel to Dublin later were allowed to depart on another plane, along with their luggage.
