미국의 생명공학회사인 ATC사는 23일, 인간배아를 손상시키지 않고 배아줄기세포를 배양하는 새로운 방법을 개발했다고 발표했습니다.
줄기세포는 배아가 태아로 성장하는 가운데 조직이 될 수 있는 기본세포입니다.
ACT사는 성장의 초기단계에서 배아로부터 하나의 세포를 추출해 내 연구용으로 많은 복제를 만들어낼 수 있다고 밝혔습니다.
지금까지는 배아줄기 세포를 만들기 위해 미수정란이나 잉여 수정배아를 사용해야 했고, 이 과정에서 이들 미수정란과 잉여 수정배아가 파괴될 수 밖에 없었습니다.

An American biotechnology company says it has developed a way to extract stem cells from embryos without destroying the embryo itself.
Stem cells are master cells that can turn into any kind of tissue as the embryo develops into a fetus. The company (called Advanced Cell Technology) said Wednesday it can extract a single cell from the embryo at an early stage of development and create a number of copies of it for research.
Until now, the standard procedure was to extract a large number of cells when an embryo is about five days old, destroying the embryo in the process.
Scientists hope that research using stem cells can help in the development of treatments for diseases, but the technique is controversial because of ethical concerns over the destruction of embryos.
The developers of the new method say it will avoid those issues, but opponents, such as the Roman Catholic Church, say any use of stem cells is not acceptable.
