필리핀의 알베르토 로물로 외무 장관은 버마 군사 정부의 부진한 민주 개혁 진전에 관한 다른 나라들의 우려를 둘러싸고 버마 군부로부터 아무런 응답을 얻어내지 못했다고 말했습니다.
로물로 장관은 14일 사흘 일정으로 버마를 방문한 뒤 귀국길에 버마 민주화 지도자 아웅산 수지 여사 등 정치 운동가들을 석방하라는 동남아세아국가연합, 약칭 아세안의 촉구를 되풀이했습니다. 로물로 장관은 지난 주 버마 군부의 탄쉐 장군등 5명의 고위 지도자들과 만났습니다.
그러나 로물로 장관은 수지 여사는 만나지 못했다고 전했습니다. 아세안 회원국들은 버마의 열악한 인권 기록에 불만을 제기하면서 민주 개혁을 꺼리고 있는 버마 군부로 인해 아세안의 전 세계적인 명성이 실추되고 있다고 주장하고 있습니다.

The Philippines' foreign secretary says he has failed to get a response from Burma to other countries' concerns about the military government's slow progress on democratic reforms.
Returning to Manila from a three-day trip to Burma, Alberto Romulo said today (Monday) he repeated an appeal from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations for Burma to release political activists, including pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Romulo met the military junta's five top leaders, including General Than Shwe, last week. He said he did not meet Aung San Suu Kyi.
ASEAN member nations have complained about Burma's poor human rights record and say its reluctance to make democratic reforms is damaging the group's reputation around the world.
The Philippines recently took the chair of ASEAN from Malaysia, which had also criticized Burma's government.
