Israeli troops are widening their push into southern Lebanon, with some units already reported to have reached the Litani River (about 20 kilometers north of the Israeli border).
The expanded Israeli push comes after the United Nations Security Council adopted a ceasefire resolution aimed at ending the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel says it has around 30-thousand soldiers in Lebanon as it tries to push Hezbollah beyond the Litani.
Seven Israeli soldiers were reported killed in Lebanon today (Saturday). At least another 50 were wounded. Israeli helicopters airlifted hundreds of soldiers onto the battlefield today in what the Israeli media are calling the country's largest aerial operation since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Israeli commanders say that after reaching the Litani, troops will clean up the area south of the river of Hezbollah infrastructure and fighters, even as a ceasefire declaration is expected on Monday.
