이라크 수도 바그다드에서는 6일 갈수록 악화하고 있는 정파간 폭력사태를 줄이기 위한 노력의 일환으로 미군 증원병력이 거리 순찰 활동에 들어갔습니다.
이를 위해 미 육군 172 스트라이커 여단 소속 병사 약 3천7백명이 이라크 북부지역 근무를 마치고 다시 바그다드에 배치됐습니다. 이들 병력 가운데 일부는 폭력사태가 가장 빈발하는 바그다드 서부의 수니파 지역에 배치됐습니다.
이라크에서는 지난 2월 사마라의 시아파 회교사원에서 일어난 폭탄공격사건 이후 시아파와 수니 아랍계 사이에 폭력사태가 잇따르고 있습니다.
이번에 추가 배치된 병력은 애초 12개월의 이라크 근무를 마치고 미국으로 복귀할 예정이었으며 이들의 근무연장으로 이라크 내 전체 미군병력은 약 13만명에 달하게 됐습니다.
한편 이라크 경찰은 자살 폭탄 공격범이 티그리트의 한 장례식장에서 폭탄을 터트려 최소한 10명이 사망하고 20명이 부상했다고 말했습니다. 20일에 발생한 이 공격에서 또한 20명의 부상자도 발생했습니다.

U.S. troop reinforcements began patrolling the streets of Baghdad today (Sunday) as part of a major effort to reduce deadly sectarian violence in the Iraqi capital.
About three-thousand-700 U.S. soldiers from the army's 172nd Stryker Brigade have been sent to Baghdad after completing a mission in northern Iraq.
The U.S. reinforcements have been deployed to some of the most violent, Sunni-dominated neigbhborhoods in western Baghdad.
Iraq has been engulfed in a wave of sectarian violence between Shi'ite and Sunni Arabs since the February bombing of a Shi'ite mosque in Samarra.
The U.S. military's 172nd Stryker Brigade had been due to return home after a 12-month tour of duty. The extended deployment of the brigade means the overall U.S. force in Iraq remains at around 130-thousand.
Iraqi police say a suicide bomber has detonated explosives at a funeral procession, killing at least 10 people.
The attack (today/Sunday) in the town of Tikrit also injured about 20 others.
