라이스 장관은 6일 미국의 NBC 방송의 일요 시사프로그램인 ‘언론과의 만남’에 출연해 미국은 쿠바의 민주주의 진전을 더욱 원하는 사람들을 지원할 것이라며 카스트로 의장이 또다른 독재자로 교체되서는 안된다고 말했습니다.
이런가운데 볼리비아를 방문한 쿠바의 카를로스 라헤 국가 평의회 부의장은 5일 카스트로 의장은 위암에 걸리지 않았으며 지난 달 31일 받은 내장 출혈을 막는 수술에서 순조롭게 회복중이라고 말했습니다.
쿠바 정부는 카스트로 의장의 건강이 악화되고 있다는 설을 거듭 부인하고 있으나 그의 건강 악화에 관한 소문은 계속 나돌고 있습니다.
카스트로 의장은 자신의 권력을 동생 라울 카스트로 국방장관에게 인계했으나 라울 장관은 카스트로 의장의 수술 이후 공개석상에 모습을 드러내지 않고 있습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice says the United States encourages democratic change in Cuba but would not stir up a political crisis while Cuban President Fidel Castro remains ill.
On U.S. television today (NBC's "Meet the Press"), Rice said the United States stands with those who want a more democratic process in Cuba, and that Fidel Castro should not be replaced by another dictator.
Meanwhile, during a visit to Bolivia on Saturday, Cuba's vice president, Carlos Lage said Mr. Castro does not have stomach cancer and is recovering from Monday's surgery.
Mr. Lage said that the Cuban leader is recovering favorably from surgery to stop intestinal bleeding.
Cuba's government has repeatedly denied that Mr. Castro's health is deteriorating -- but rumors about his health are still circulating.
President Castro handed over power to his brother, Raul who has not been seen in public since before Fidel Castro's surgery.
